Did you know ……?
…….what
time your child will be eating at school?
Morning play-time is from 11:00am – 11:30am and lunch-time is
1:30pm to 2:15pm. Children eat
in the classroom with the teacher before going out-side to play. In order
for children to sustain their energy throughout the school day, it is a
good idea to provide a reasonable sized morning snack. For example a
combination of a sandwich, a piece of fruit, crackers and cheese or dried
fruit.
…..that
at play time and lunch time the preps are closely supervised for the first
few weeks at school? The
buddies meet the prep child in their classrooms and they eat their lunch
together, when the play time bell goes they then go out into the yard
together, the buddy helps their prep child to find a friend or game to
play or initiates a game themselves. The prep teachers also spend a lot of
the play-times and lunch times keeping a watchful eye over the new
students as they get used to being in the yard. After the settling in
period, the practice reverts to usual with 2 teachers on yard duty.
…..
that a whole school assembly is held every Monday morning ????
Children still line up and go to the classroom with their teacher
to put their school bags away. Interested
parents and younger siblings make their way to the hall and are joined by
the children and teachers shortly after 9:00am.
Assembly finishes at varying times, but is usually over in 20 to 30
minutes. Grades take it in turns to host the assemblies, using it as an
opportunity to share their work with our school community. Parents enjoy a
coffee and a chat in the staff room afterwards.
…..
that if you have any concerns or questions about your child you should
approach the teacher either at morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up or
you can phone to arrange an appointment?
If it is a simple matter it may be dealt with quickly at the
drop-off or pick-up, otherwise you can arrange another mutually convenient
time to meet.
……
how to purchase additional items of uniform?
Some items of the uniform are on display in the small foyer outside
the after-care room. Order
forms are available from the office and completed forms may be lodged with
the office at any time. Items
may then be collected on Monday mornings first thing after assembly or on
Wednesday afternoons between 3:00pm and 3:30pm.
Did
you know …. ?
……that
if it is raining at drop-off time in the morning, children are permitted
to go straight up to the classrooms, from 8.45 am, rather than line up in
the rain and usually an announcement will be made? Also, if it is raining
at either play time or lunch time, the children have supervised indoor
play in their classrooms using classroom equipment and games rather than
play outside.
……that
if you have lost a jumper or hat or any other item, it may be found in
Lost Property ???? Lost
Property is held in boxes located in the foyer outside the after-care
room. Of course it will
be easier to identify your child’s possessions if they are named….
remember on any day there may be around 200 or so navy blue, nearly
identical, hats at the school !!!
Oh and keep checking from time to time, as it sometimes takes a few
days, weeks or even months for the item to be recognised as “lost” and
make its way to lost property.
…..
that a great way for you to see how your child is doing is to help out in
the classroom ???? Your child
will also enjoy seeing you in the classroom and younger siblings are
welcomed. Whilst some can make
a regular commitment with their help on a weekly or fortnightly basis,
your help is appreciated on any day, at any time, with as much, or as
little time as you have to spare. It
may be help with reading, covering books, accompanying classes on
excursions or just generally in the classroom.
So have a word to your child’s teacher about how and when you may
be able to help.
….
that a great way to find out what is going on at school is to join one of
the school committees ????? Current
committees with parent involvement include Promotions, Education, Parent
and Teacher Action Group (Fundraising), Finance and Facilities, Care
Program and of course the School Council. Generally these Committees meet
monthly, although the Parent and Teacher Action Group comprises several
sub-committees who work on various fundraising projects throughout the
year. If you are interested in
finding out more about these Committees the meeting times and dates are
advertised in the newsletters come along and you will be welcomed aboard.
…
that School can be very tiring for prep children and that depending on the
child this may last for the full first year….? Naturally children will
vary and whilst almost all will be very tired come 3:30 each day in Term
1, it is quite common for children to still be quite tired out by school
in Term 4. Realising this, it
may help you cope with difficult or changed behaviour after school and you
can help your child by not expecting too much of them after school in
their first year.
……that
formal, detailed Reports are sent home twice a year at the end of Term 2
and Term 4? The Reports detail
your child’s progress in each area of the curriculum.
An explanatory letter is also provided to help new parents
understand some of the terminology used.
The current reporting format is undergoing change as a result of
new state government guidelines and the introduction of “VELS” – the
new Victorian Essential Learning Standards.
Stay tuned for further developments in this area.
…...that
once the preps have settled into the classroom there will be a specific
fixed timetable for the specialist subjects for each class?
An example might be: PE may be Monday; Art and Music/Drama on
Wednesday and Library (2 sessions) on Thursday and Friday.
There is a timetable for specialist subjects in the staff room, so
come along for a coffee/chat after Monday assembly some time and check it
out.
…
that at pick-up in the afternoon preps must be collected in person from
the classroom rather than met in the school grounds ? This requirement is
made in order to ensure that children are safely handed over to their
parents/guardians. This routine is maintained throughout the preps first
year. Those preps that are
going to After-Care are collected by Daniel just before 3:30 and
accompanied down to the after-care room.
