The manager of “Lynches Bridge”, Dana, contacted Kensington Primary School earlier this year and invited us to exhibit student art work in their aged care facility. This seemed a great opportunity to connect with our community and a win-win situation for the students of Kensington and the residences of Lynches Bridge, only a few blocks away. I chose some of the grade 5-6 dragon drawings from term one’s lessons and few other collaborative pieces and popped down a few weeks ago to put them on exhibition in the newly repainted dementia ward.
Upon my return, Mark and I hatched a plan to take a group of students down to see the work on display and visit the elderly. Unfortunately for Mark, he was unwell on the day we had arranged to visit. Luckily for us, Julie volunteered to support us on this tour, thanks so much Julie. Also, luckily for us at the time or visit, we were all treated to a performance by a singer engaged to sing some “old favourites”. A lovely elderly lady lead out onto the “dance floor“ with her walking frame, picking up the waltz rhythm, moving smoothly and setting us all an example of how to relax, show courage and enjoy music.
Sienna was brave enough to take up my offer of a dance, and we joined her, gently moving to the groove. It was not long before many other students also enjoyed this impromptu experience of having a little a dance together, to the delight of adults and children alike.
This collaboration for exhibiting art work is planned to be on going. I will endeavour to bring fresh art works down the road about once every 6 months.
