Respectful Relationships

Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.

Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community. This approach leads to positive impacts on student’s academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students. Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child can achieve their full potential.

The Respectful Relationships Curriculum is mandated in all Victorian classrooms and is a very important part of what we teach at Kensington Primary School and include the following topics:

  • Emotional Literacy
  • Personal Strengths
  • Positive Coping
  • Problem Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help Seeking
  • Identity
  • Positive Gender Relations

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

Promoting positive student behaviour and wellbeing is a priority at Kensington Primary School.  School-wide positive behaviour support (SWPBS) is a whole-school framework which provides an approach to promote improved behaviour at school.  SWPBS has been developed through evidence and data and has shown to reduce inappropriate behaviour, improving school culture, and increasing academic performance.

Professional Learning Teams and teachers explicitly teach the positive behaviour expectations, just as we explicitly teach academics. Explicit SWBPS lessons are planned and taught based on the KPS SWPBS scope and sequence and the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Learning and Creativity. Mistakes in behaviour are treated as learning opportunities, much as mistakes in learning are treated as learning opportunities.

Continuous Improvement and focus on learning growth

We are fortunate to be working with the SWPBS coach from the Department of Education to continue to review, reflect and refine our Health, SWPBS, Respectful Relationships and Cultural Appreciation curriculum documentation to ensure we are explicitly teaching units with rigour and fidelity.
