On Thursday 18 June, class 3-4D walked down to the Ascot Vale Stockfeeds Store on Racecourse Rd to pick out a couple of new chooks for the school. The class met with storeowner Les Foulkes, who demonstrated how to care for the chickens and took many questions from the egg-cited children.  Les then very kindly gifted two beautiful Isa Brown chooks to the school, along with several bags of feed.  Upon their return, the class chose names for the new chooks: Pecky and Sunshine. You can visit the newest feathery members of KPS when you next visit the school coop – Sunshine is sporting a red leg tag and Pecky has a green one. They were successfully introduced to the three original chickens and are getting along flap-tastically!

The chickens are part of the school’s sustainability program, supplying us with fresh eggs for our cooking program and consuming lunchbox scraps. They also play a role in student wellbeing, keeping children engaged and emotionally connected to KPS. Class 3-4D have been involved in looking after the school chickens this year, with two monitors from the grade supplying them with fresh food and water.

Thanks very much to the Ascot Vale Stockfeeds Store and wonderful Les for his generous donation. Thanks also to parents Sharyn Olive and Tania Provan who accompanied us on the excursion and play such an important role in sustainability at KPS.
